Three Mountains. One Resort. More Fun for Everyone!

Located on the western end of the Lake Superior Snow Belt, we're just west of Hurley, Wisconsin and Ironwood in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Ski this sprawling mountain complex, including 43 runs; from double black diamond expert trails ... to intermediate trails ... to easy runs for beginners. We had more than 15 feet of pure, natural snow during the 2008-2009 season. Thank you for visiting us and we hope to see you next season!

The Whitecap Mountains are *the natural* for traditional downhill skiing & snowboarding, but you'll still find a small trick or two for fun.

Kids 6 and under ski free!

Snow
Start with the snow! On average, more than 200 inches of pure, natural snow falls upon The Whitecap Mountains each year. We're on the western side of the Lake Superior Snow Belt with breathtaking mountaintop views of the big lake and the Apostle Islands more than 1,000 feet below. We also make snow nightly on our more challenging runs when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate.

Yes, mountains! This is not your typical Midwest ski hill. You don't just go up and down the same side of one hill all day. Whitecap, Thunderhead and Eagles Nest mountains make up The Whitecap Mountains Ski Resort. They're part of the ancient Penokee Range.

Spread over these sprawling mountains you will discover 43 fun ski trails. It's true that some resorts may boast a higher vertical. Yet when you ski a Whitecap double diamond trail, you are challenged from top to bottom. None of this turning green halfway down the mountain. Expert skiers are even impressed with the quality of our easier terrain. They compliment our intermediate runs as being "more interesting" and "more fun" than at your typical Midwestern ski areas.

Many people feel that before heading west to ski the Rockies The Whitecap Mountains are the only place in the Midwest where you can really train yourself well. With the long lines at airport security and expensive airline prices, our affordable packages make skiing or snow-boarding The Whitecap Mountains a real bargain!

With 43 downhill runs, we have plenty of skiing for everybody at every skill level. And all skiers report that they like how we separate the area for beginners from the main ski traffic.

Because we offer so many trails on three unique mountains, be sure to pick up a trail map at the lift ticket counter. The map will help you navigate your way for a wonderful, wilderness Alpine experience.

We also offer more chairlifts per skier! There are no long lines. You don't have to stand around waiting to reach the top of any of our mountains. You spend more time having fun doing what you came to do: ski.

Learn to Ski and Snowboard
Be sure to visit our Ski School and Kids pages. The Whitecap Mountains offer a wide variety of ski school programs for beginners of all ages. We also provide brush up courses for more advanced skiers to improve upon your skills. The Polar Bear Bowl offers beginners a safe place to learn. A tiny hill and the Magic Carpet Lift is perfect for the littlest skiers. That and our bunny hill are removed from the main ski traffic and more protected from the elements. All of these things make everybody's ski experience more fun at Whitecap.
